The Errant Heart

The soul of their being and heart
In the beginning were kept pure
Through the kindred that guarded the knowledge,
The serpent’s gift from the garden.

All find out what is contained,
Forbidden fruit and a whole new world.
Open to young people some earlier than others
But always to be tasted eventually.

The innocent stay in not jaded estate
Seeing through little slivers of light
Between the fingers with their hands pressed
Against their cheeks and forehead.

Their fingers lifted one at a time
Slowly starting to realize the
Errant thoughts, ideas, and deeds
Some would call that being enlightened.

A new realization of what else was involved,
A life where thought and deed could go in a
Completely opposite direction then what
Had been the precept in prior years.

All have seen it to one degree or another,
Traveling the path that some have to
Destruction or new life depending on
The distance of fall in the serpent’s grip.

They move as the errant one
Life, like waves approaching a bank,
Down the trough and out on the peak,
Steeped in the serpent’s grip or times of naive youth.

Hands are lifted completely away,
All transgressions vale lifted in just
A few years, casting a permanent shadow
On a life born for innocence.

The mind twists and writhes with logic,
Desire for the things that are moral.
Good and the immorality of that which God
Has deemed that they not do.
So is the struggle of the errant heart.
