Ghost Dancer

It was in Tuba City, Navajo Country,
When he was just five years old.
Dad took him to the cliffs outside of tiny burg,
Dirt road was dusty, long and cold.

The cliffs there were purple and blue,
Dark but with a white glow.
Full moon sat cross a canyon side,
Viewed from the other.

The moon shone down on canyon wall,
Splayed on the rocks of ,
“The moon will have to come through that Rock”.
They waited a long time and the boy got tired.

Then she appeared like a ghost on the wall
She shimmered, the shape of a woman
She would sometimes dance on the canyon wall
Ancient and local legends state it.

Legend says she fell years ago off the cliff
On the far side to her death
The canyon was purple blue the dancer pale
And yellow from the moonlight.

She appeared to wear a native dress with
Large boots like moccasins,
He thought the Navajo knew her from the legend
None of the Navajo he knew had ever heard of it

It must be a Hopi legend, the people of the mesas
It could be the “Ancient Ones” the Navajo did not talk about,
The ones that left strange writing on the rock walls.
A Navajo must get cleansed after seeing the writing.
